APXCORE PRODUCT OVERVIEW
APX Core is a powerful software integration tool for the IBM PC.
It allow you to combine different types of software into an inte-
grated package, even though programs may not have been meant to
work together. Virtually any software that is available for the
IBM PC can be integrated with APX Core.
APX Core does this by allowing you to load several programs into
your computer at the same time. In addition, APX Core enables you
to move data between these programs - without programming! It also
saves you time by letting you record entire sequences of keystrokes
and then play them back with the flick of a key. It's no exagger-
ation to say that any one of these features would be worth the
price of the whole program.
Ease of use was a primary consideration in the design of APX Core.
There are only a few basic commands that give you all the tools
necessary to create an integrated set of applications for your
particular needs. That means that you can learn to use the program
quickly and with a minimum of fuss.
DESCRIPTION OF FEATURES
APX Core divides your computer into separate "tasks". Each task
functions in essentially the same way as your computer does nor-
mally under DOS. Thus, you can run a different program in each
task.
You can choose the number of tasks you want to use (up to eight)
as well as the amount of memory for each task. You can also choose
to have any tasks operate concurrently in the "background". In
this way, you can have programs running in the background while
you are busy with another program in the "foreground".
THE BASIC COMMANDS
There are four basic APX Core commands, each of which is issued by
pressing a simple keystroke. Of course, you can change the key-
strokes used for any of the commands to avoid conflicts with keys
used by other programs you may have. Here's a brief description
of each command:
SWAP TASK The Swap Task command lets you instantly gain
COMMAND access to any program running in any task.
A single keystroke swaps you from spreadsheet
program to word processor. Each task has it's
own keystroke that calls it into view.
TRANSCRIBE The Transcribe command enables you to "cut and
COMMAND paste" text or data from one program to another.
All you need to do is to select the source task
and to select the destination task , in any order.
To select the source , you use the cursor to mark
off the block of text/data on the source task's
screen that you want to move. The text/data is
then "fed" to the destination task, as though you had typed it in yourself.
KEYSAVE The Keysave command allows you to record sequences
COMMAND of keystrokes as macros that can then be played
back at any time. First, you are asked to select
a playback key to be used for playing back the
macro. After that, whatever you type at the key-
board will be recorded (a soft "beep" accompanies
each keystroke) until you end the command. You
can then replay the macro by simply pressing the
playback key. Up to sixteen macros may be defined
at any time, and macros can be nested inside one
another. Over a thousand keystrokes can be saved
in a single macro, and your macros can be deleted
or redefined whenever you wish. Macros can also be
saved on file for later reuse.
WINDOW The Window command is used to create windows for
COMMAND your tasks. A task window can be any size and can
be anywhere on the screen. A window is displayed
as a rectangular box that contains a portion of
a task's screen. You can also scroll within a
window to view different portions of a task's
screen. The window functions (size, position,
scroll) are executed by using the cursor control
keys in combination with other keys. For example,
using the <Ctrl> key along with the cursor keys
controls the window size, while the <Shft> key
together with the cursor keys shifts the window
position, and use of the cursor keys alone scrolls
the window.
All APX Core commands and features are fully documented in a user's
manual that is included in the package.
APX Core can also be used as a powerful software development tool.
APX Core functions are callable by other programs, and these functions
are documented in an accompanying Programmer's Interface Manual.
Using these functions, a program can control all APX Core features
that are available interactively.
USING APX CORE
What can APX Core do for you? Quite simply, it enables you to do
twice as much, and in half the time! Here are some specific examples
of how APX Core can work for you:
WRITING
You probably have a favorite word processing program that you are
accustomed to using. Often, you may have to refer back and forth
between different documents or files. With APX Core you can run
several copies of the word processor and edit different documents
at the same time.
You can print one document while you are editing another. And if
you need to erase a file or perform any DOS function you can do it
without ever leaving your program. APX Core also gives you the
ability to move text from one document to another in a simple,
visual manner.
TELEMARKETING
Telemarketing efforts practically require that you have the ability
to do several things on your computer at once. Using the APX Core,
you can have a communications program to do auto dial-up. Then you
can quickly search an inventory database for pricing information,
switch instantly to your word processor to write and print an invoice
in the background while taking the next order.
By having all these programs loaded and running at the same time, you
can flip rapidly from one to another. Automate the system even fur-
ther by using APX Core to move information from database to word
processor at a stroke.
IN THE OFFICE
In many offices, there are generally two or three application pro-
grams that are used most extensively. Typically, you might load a
word processing program to write a report, only to discover that you
need to reference a spreadsheet or database. When these types of
programs are integrated using APX Core, the need to reference "hard
copy" is eliminated since you can just switch from one program to
another to view the information you want.
Using APX Core you can "cut and paste" information from a spreadsheet
into your editor. Even data received by a communications program that
is linked to a mainframe database can be moved to your spreadsheet
without any additional programming. In fact, you can save the sequence
of keystrokes required to do this and repeat the entire operation using
a single keystroke.
COMPARISON OF "OFF THE SHELF" MULTI-TASKING PROGRAMS
There is a need for a low cost product that could effectively integrate
existing software. This table compares key features of APX Core with
those of other similar products.
